Rallying behind an animated home crowd at the Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville, Tennessee, Vanderbilt upset the seemingly unshakable Gators.

In a hard-fought battle, No. 5 Florida (13-2, 4-1 SEC) ultimately fell to Vanderbilt 3-1 (13-2, 4-2 SEC) on Sunday for its second loss of the season.

Vanderbilt came into the match with a threatening offense, leading the SEC in hitting percentage (.312) and assists per set (13.61). It also sat second in the conference in kills per set (14.48). Opposite hitter Samantha Wunsch was critical to orchestrating scoring plays for Vanderbilt on Sunday, tallying 15 total kills.

For both teams, the contest was riddled with errors. Five total service errors were made in the first 20 points of the match. By the end of the match, Florida logged 27 errors, and Vanderbilt had tallied 20 of their own.

The Commodores gained momentum early, capitalizing on Florida’s mistakes and retaining their challenge on a no-touch call.

The Gators fired back and took a brief lead 14-13, but their run did not last long. Both teams went point-for-point until Vanderbilt broke out for a 4-0 run in the final points of the set.

That set the tone for the remainder of the afternoon. Though Vanderbilt dropped the second set 25-22, it powered back for two straight wins to close out the match.

It wasn’t all bad for Florida, however. Junior setter Taylor Parks powered her swing and pummelled away a season-high 11 kills.

Parks, a dominant leader, entered the contest holding the team-high 508 assists. She recorded 30 in the loss and channeled her ability to threaten as an attacker.

Against Kentucky, Parks logged a then-season-high six kills. On Sunday, she notched three in the first set alone and finished with 11. She also posted a .556 hitting percentage and remained consistent in ball placement, allowing her teammates to pummel away kills of their own.

However, Florida’s struggles may have been exacerbated by the absence of some of its biggest threats on the attacking front.

In the second set, Selena Leban finished with a -.300 hitting percentage. She struggled to find a groove, logging zero kills and four errors.

Additionally, senior outside hitter Kamryn Chaney’s first kill came late in the second set. The Vanderbilt transfer entered the match with the team-high kills on the season (180) but had a slow start against her former comrades. Chaney had a mere -.250 hitting percentage in the first set.

Chaney was ultimately able to come alive when it mattered most, steering the team to set point with a kill that took the Gators to 24-21 in the second set. Vanderbilt answered right back with a kill, but it wasn’t enough for them to secure the second set, succumbing to Florida with an attacking error in the final point. Chaney finished the contest with 10 kills and four blocks.

Florida came out hot in the third set, riding the momentum of their second-set victory. But Vanderbilt found its stride in the final stretch, keeping it within arm's reach. The Commodores remained aggressive through a back-and-forth sequence in the tail end of the set, ultimately clinching a 2-1 lead with a 25-23 third-set win.

Bolstered by that momentum, Vanderbilt remained dialed and held the upper hand for the remainder of the affair. Sophomore libero Lily Hayes anchored Florida's defense with her best efforts, recording 16 digs, but it wasn’t enough to spare the Gators. Florida lost its spark and came up short in the final set of the match, 25-27.

The Gators will remain on the road to take on Texas A&M (10-6, 3-1 SEC) on Friday. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the Reed Arena in College Station, Texas.
