Among the many Veterans Day celebrations Tuesday across Gainesville and Alachua County, the Kanapaha Botanical Gardens held a ceremony at the Alachua County Veterans Memorial at 10:30 a.m. It was open to the public and free to active and retired military personnel. Those in attendance enjoyed a drill team demonstration, flag and wreath-laying ceremony and musical tributes. Children and teenagers from both the Milton Lewis Young Marines and the Billy Mitchell Drill Team participated in the services.

Gainesville's first Great Pumpkin Bash attracted about 200 visitors of all ages on Oct. 11. Families walked around the plaza, pushing strollers and walking dogs. Vendors sold food, drinks and clothes, while tablers offered information about their organizations. The inaugural fall festival also featured face painting, a scavenger hunt and musical chairs with polka renditions of pop songs.
