UF sends students to school with text-based donation program

Five dollars and a phone is all you need to help put a UF student through college, thanks to a new text-based donation program launched by UF this past week.

The program allows anyone to donate $5 to the Florida Opportunity Scholars program by texting "UF" to the number 90999.

Up to five donations can be made each month.

The fund is for first-generation Florida students whose families make less than $40,000 a year.

In October 2008, coaches Urban Meyer and Billy Donovan said they would head a campaign to raise $50 million for the fund. So far, $8 million has been raised.

Meyer recently committed $1 million to the program over six years. Machen pledged his performance bonuses, which total $285,000, to the fund in December.

Chris Brazda, spokesman for the UF Foundation, which handles donations to the university, said this is the first time the foundation has used texting to raise money.
