UF will implement an early decision admissions option beginning with students applying for Fall 2027 enrollment, the university announced Thursday.
The early decision option will allow prospective students to apply as early as Aug. 1 and receive an admissions decision by Dec. 11, months earlier than UF’s early action and regular decisions, which were released in late January and mid March this year.
Students admitted via early decision are contractually obligated to enroll at UF and withdraw applications from other schools.
According to UF’s announcement, the change follows feedback from high school guidance counselors, students and families who have requested an earlier admissions option.
The university also said the early decision option will help UF compete with peer institutions that already offer an early decision option. Florida State University announced in April it will begin offering early decision admissions for the upcoming application cycle.
Many universities use early decision to increase enrollment yield rates and attract more competitive applicants who are prepared to commit to a school early in the application process.
In the press release, Mary Parker, UF’s vice president of enrollment management, said offering early decision will allow students who are confident about attending UF more flexibility when applying and the opportunity to finalize college plans sooner.
The early decision application deadline is Oct. 15. Applicants will be required to submit a signed agreement from the student, a parent or guardian and a high school counselor indicating their commitment to enroll if accepted through early decision.
UF will continue to offer non-binding early action and regular decision options for students who may need more time to complete their applications or may not be ready to commit to UF.
According to university officials, all applicants, regardless of application type, will undergo the same review process evaluating both academic and nonacademic factors. Students who apply through the early decision process will remain eligible for all offered financial aid and scholarships.
