Gainesville is gearing up to illuminate the skies with balloons and big hearts.

The kickoff event for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light The Night Walk is tonight from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Thomas Center.

UF’s chapter of the Pre-med American Medical Student Association has come together with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to plan the walk held on Nov. 18.

“Tuesday’s event is to get people excited and to see what Light The Night is all about,” said Leanne Iorio, vice president of the UF Pre-med AMSA. “We want to get people aware of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the reasons why we raise money.”

The kickoff celebration will enable team captains to exchange fundraising ideas and feature a remembrance ceremony for lives lost to the blood cancers, Iorio said.

There will also be a number of booths from various businesses supporting the walk as well as a table to register people who want to walk in November.

Participants must raise a minimum of $100 to walk. UF Pre-med AMSA hopes to raise a total of $10,000 this year.

Registered walkers will receive a T-shirt, food and balloon. Each balloon has a light fixed inside it and is red, white or gold depending on if the walker is a supporter, survivor or representative of a lost loved one.
