After an early exit from the NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Tournament earlier this year, Florida looked to regroup over the summer and start fresh in the fall.
The season began on Saturday with the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) All-American Championship pre-qualifying rounds hosted by the University of Tulsa.
But of the four Gators to compete in Tulsa, Oklahoma, only one found success. Senior Kevin Edengren successfully represented Florida in the tough round of 256 with a hard-fought comeback win.
However, the two newly acquired players and established sophomore Andreas Timini did not have the same luck.
Edengren, the Swede, defeated Texas Tech junior Thiago Guglieri 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. With the win, he advanced to the upcoming singles round of 128.
His main doubles partner from the spring season, Timini, could not follow that success as he was defeated in straight sets. Junior Texas Tech Raider, Imran Daniel Hazli, called game quickly with a 6-1, 6-2 performance.
Australian freshman Ty Host, who came to Florida with a career-high ITF Juniors ranking of No. 34 in January 2025, also fell in straight sets. Sophomore Tarheel Ian Mayew delivered a 6-2 straight-set defeat to the Gator, who entered college tennis with nine ITF junior titles.
UF freshman Chen Ye also fell in straight sets later that afternoon. Despite Ye’s numerous powerful forehand hits and sideline winners, junior Oklahoma Sooner Alejandro Melero proved too much to handle. Despite leading in both sets, Ye finally fell 7-5, 6-4 for his first collegiate defeat. Before competing in the round of 256, Ye joined Florida with an ITF junior ranking of No. 80 and five junior singles titles to his name.
Edengren will face Baylor University freshman Radek Chodora in the round of 128 at a later time to be determined.
