We all know dorm living can be tough. The transition from walk-in closets and huge bathrooms is enough for any freshman to face, but one of the most difficult aspects of a dorm is the kitchen space.

Common kitchen areas range from crowded to dirty to dated. However, they are made for cooking! With a few tricks, you can make gourmet meals with only a handful of cheap ingredients and short prep time.

One of the easiest things to make is stir-fry. Veggies + chicken + sauce of your choice= delicious stir-fry! Just sauté the vegetables in oil for a few minutes and then add in your sauce for another three to five minutes. Add the ingredients that need to cook longest, such as meats, in first so they have the most time to cook. Noodles can be added as well for an extra bit of flair to the meal.

Another simple recipe for dorm cooking is homemade pizza. Pizza crusts come in low-carb options at the grocery store. Top them with veggies and a little cheese and tomato sauce, and all that’s left to do is bake for about 10 minutes at 450 degrees. It is very simple and fun to make with friends. Homemade pizzas beat greasy leftover slices any day.

Tired of chipotle breaking the bank and your diet? Make a burrito bowl in your dorm yourself! Grab some pre-cooked brown rice from the store and heat it up.

Next toss in some black beans, corn, salsa and anything else you want and microwave it all for less than five minutes. Top with cheese, guacamole or lettuce. This option is healthier and can be made quickly and inexpensively.

So next time skip the ramen, and try out one of these healthy recipes that won’t leave you soaking in sodium.
