Gainesville has its fair share of pizza joints close to campus where students go to satisfy their pizza needs. However, one pizzeria located a little off the beaten trail is worth a try: Blue Highway.
Blue Highway is located in the Tioga Town Center about a 20-minute drive down West University Avenue from midtown.
I went to Blue Highway for dinner, but the casual atmosphere would also work for lunch. The menu offers a selection of appetizers, soup, salads, sandwiches, piadines (basically flatbread sandwiches), calzones and pasta.
But obviously Blue Highway’s specialty is pizza. With 14 different options, there’s a pie to fit whatever mood you’re in. Varieties range from Greek to Buffalo Chicken or Tempeh to Scampi.
There is also an option to create your own pizza if none of the specialty pizzas grab your attention. You select the type of crust (thin or Sicilian) and the desired toppings. There is vegan pizza sauce available upon request.
I tried the Margherita pizza and a “Create Your Own” with sausage and pepperoni on thin crust. They were both good, but the sausage and pepperoni had more substance with the meat toppings.
Overall the atmosphere and food at Blue Highway is nothing mind-blowingly original, but it’s a great place to go if you love pizza and want to try someplace new.
