Florida women’s tennis had a successful weekend at the Bedford Cup in Jacksonville on Friday and Saturday, highlighted by a 5-0 record in doubles.
Five athletes represented the Gators at the annual tournament, hosted by the University of North Florida, and competed against other Florida universities.
Florida senior Xinyi Nong and sophomore Nikola Daubnerova entered the tournament with a first-round bye following their performance at the ITA All-American Championships on Sept. 22.
The pair played their first match on Friday, defeating UCF sophomore Jade Psonka and freshman Lauren Seye 6-4. In the semi-finals, Nong and Daubnerova defeated Florida Atlantic’s freshman Malika Amirgaliyeva and redshirt freshman Katrin Pavkova 6-2 to wrap up a 2-0 run at the Bedford Cup for the pair.
Florida was also represented in the doubles draw by sophomore Gabia Paskauskas and freshman Lucie Pawlak, who competed in their first tournament as a pair. They finished 3-0 to help bring the Gators to an undefeated record in the doubles draw.
On the singles side, Florida junior Valery Gynina won two matches before she fell to UNF senior Laurie Barendse in three sets.
Pawlak and Nong also went 2-1 in singles.
Following a first-round bye, Daubnerova went undefeated in singles to wrap up the weekend for the Gators.
UF will continue fall play on Oct. 16 in the ITA Southeast Regional Championships in Lake Nona, Florida.
