There is inherent power in the written word, and I’ve come to realize the impact. I need not look any further than the handmade card that sits on the desk in my room, written to me nearly two years ago. The cover reads: "congrats on quitting the Alligator," in bold letters. That’s how excited I was to leave this newspaper after Summer 2013. It was an occasion warranting celebration. It was before I understood the value of written words.

Last year, I came home from class to find my roommate and a few of my friends glued to a laptop. “This fight comp is crazy; come see this,” my roommate said. I sat down and watched a series of brutal videos of people fighting. Some were alcohol-fueled altercations outside bars, others were neighborhood events with dozens of local spectators.

There is an infinite amount of singers who do song covers on YouTube. Some of these artists become so popular that they begin to make their own original content in an attempt to make the transition from YouTube sensation to fulltime music artist. Music acts such as Timeflies, Tinashe, and Justin Bieber have shown the success of this formula. Today’s Spotlight artist Jeni Suk is currently making this transition and producing some phenomenal music in the process.

The sixth annual TEDxUF conference was held Saturday, and it was a chance to see the awe of TED Talks come to life right here on our own campus. Unfortunately, I did not manage to land a ticket. But, inspired by the availability of an event on campus so similar to the innovative presentations I used to watch every week, I went searching for some good TED Talks to watch.

Music lately has been rooted in nostalgia. Artists have been trying to recreate the sounds of yesteryear and it is rare that these songs actually posses the essence of the music it is imitating. The work of today’s spotlight artist is an exception. Dana has found a way to channel the sounds of previous decades in a way that feels genuine and refreshing.

A poll released this week shows Americans trust Fox News more than any other television news network. The notion that Americans trust Fox more than any other network demonstrates one of two things: Either Americans are very dumb, or the quality of television news across all networks is very poor. Regardless, it demonstrates that the fourth estate needs serious work.
