A special show was slated for the previous “Free Friday” concert at Bo Diddley Community Plaza to celebrate Independence Day. It was the first installment of the concept themed after the NPR show, “A Prairie Home Companion.” Taking a Gainesville spin, it was renamed “The All-American Payne’s Prairie Home Companion,” a clever shout-out to the marshland south of town.

Every time Tim Hayes rode his bike to Boca Fiesta, he noticed the bike rack outside the restaurant was full. The handicapped rail at the neighboring Hippodrome State Theatre was loaded with bikes, too.

The Florida-favorite grocery store Publix has three locations within walking distance of each other on Archer Road. Trader Joe’s, also located in close proximity, opened this year with specialty and lesser-known products. There are, of course, other stores to get groceries and other necessities: Target, Walmart, Walgreens, if you wish. But buying local, which encompasses buying foods locally grown by professional or home-based growers on farms, is a completely new experience.

It was a hot and humid summer night in Gainesville, but an irregular breeze and large cumulus clouds offered those hitting the pavement an appreciated relief from the typical Florida mugginess we’ve grown accustomed to bearing.

Farmers markets are a great resource for affordable fresh food. When customers shop at farmers markets they are supporting local farmers as well as buying food within miles of where it was grown.

There are many things to do in Gainesville before you graduate: float down Ginnie Springs, go to a football game, have a world-famous Top burger.
