I’m that friend. The one who, if you say the wrong thing about current events or political figures, has to start a conversation about it. The one who went a little crazy when you admitted you weren’t sure if you were going to vote in the midterms. The one who seems to consider it their duty to make sure you know what’s going on in the world, even if you don’t really care. You know the friend I’m talking about.

I love coffee as much as the next student. My personal drink of choice is an espresso with soy milk and honey: plain, simple and refreshing. But I don’t drink coffee every morning. When I choose not to drink coffee, I’ll turn to a simple caffeine pill.

The current political atmosphere deserves a prime-time spot on TLC. The government’s drama is reaching a high point this week. Capitol Hill’s heated debate over the border wall reached a peak at the end of 2018 when President Trump dug his heels in and demanded his border wall, to which Democrats expressed their disapproval. Twenty-one days later and the U.S. is entering into the longest government shutdown in its history.

It is a well-known fact that our food here in the U.S. is pumped full of additives such as coloring agents and preservatives. Most Americans believe that these additives are needed to keep food from spoiling too fast. Many Americans, however, lack the knowledge of how harmful these additives can be. In fact, many additives considered safe in the U.S. are actually banned in other nations because of their toxicity. I am writing to you today in order to raise public awareness of this expanding problem that the U.S. faces. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is in charge of regulating and approving the chemicals that are allowed to be in our food. I believe it is the FDA’s responsibility to further investigate the chemicals that it has approved in the past.

You’re debating whether or not you need this coffee. You’re running on about three hours of sleep, and your eyelids are starting to give out on you. The gas warning light in your head has come on as you drowsily take notes in lecture. Your professor is throwing jokes out at the audience like life preservers as you struggle to stay afloat in the sea of the lucid and awake. His comedy is the only thing keeping you going. You scramble from one pun to the next and pray you’ll make it through the double block.

Music is a powerful thing, more powerful than many of us realize. Think back to a difficult time in your life, a crisis or funk that resulted from difficulties at work or the deterioration of a relationship with a friend or a lover. Now, think of the music that you fed your sad soul in the midst of your depression. Were you doing yourself any favors by filling your ears with uplifting melodies and inspiring lyrics, or were you assisting your nose-diving emotions with music even more depressed than you? Odds are, the latter will strike a chord with more of you than the former, and that is because it is a human need to seek community, which is reflected by the artists and genres of music we enjoy. Songs become the soundtracks to our lives, providing an emotional ally in the form of a vague image of an artist or a melody. The issue is that this relationship is inherently one-sided and has devastating potential.
