There's something I've been noticing around people our age - maybe it's because I've just returned to school and have to do countless readings on women's studies, gender and the like. But, in any case, I've come to realize that many of my peers hate to call themselves a feminist.

When I heard the most recent Dr. Pepper 10 commercial on the radio for the first time, as it claimed that “counting calories isn’t manly,” I thought to myself “Wow- this has to be the worst. Thank goodness most commercials nowadays are pretty mild; this one is just bluntly sexist!”

Something happened during my normal volunteering session the other day. We were having a rotation in the tech lab where the students have to share computers since we have about one to every two members. One of the girls came up to me, almost in tears and said “Ms. Amber, my partner keeps trying to play boy games on the computer. In middle and high school, I seemed to spend hours applying foundation, eyeliner and mascara daily in order to cover-up my imperfections. I love Angelina Jolie’s coming out about her mastectomy, for so many reasons. Ahhh yes. It’s summer and we all know what that means: weekly trips to the beach, sandy goodness, beers and, most importantly, awesome jams. Remember high school? The Black Eyed Peas came out with “I Gotta Feeling”, you just got your license, and you were finding reasons to drive all over the place just to groove to that succulently summery song. Let’s be real here, besides repeating that “Tonight’s gonna be a good good night” over 15 times, the song keeps it pretty wonderful. No politics, no innuendos, not too crazy. All in all the song gets an A on the summer tunes scale.

I’m sure most of you have heard of #safetytipsforladies. Buzzfeed recently did a piece on this newly feminist friendly hashtag. This is just one of the many new sarcastic and poignant ways feminists are utilizing social media to their advantage in commentating on patriarchal culture in a fast paced, relatable way. The best part of all this witty tweeting? Right below the surface of these rape culture jokes lays real commentary on the ridiculousness of our society when discussing women’s safety all sprinkled with a healthy dose of trolling.

Scientific research sometimes presents mixed messages for us women. These messages are intended to be helpful but can sometimes really just confuse this whole taking care of my body thing.

If you’re a food lover like me, you may already also be a feminist. There’s a wave of academia, which focuses on the “green” food movement and how it can link eating locally to feminism.
