Reviewing Drake’s latest: ‘More Life’ is an identity crisis
An identity crisis has never sounded so good. At this point in his career, Drake could rap the alphabet and it’d chart on the Billboard Hot 100.

If you haven’t been keeping up with the latest music, you’ve come to the right place. The past two weeks have been stacked with releases. Get caught up with everything you should be listening to by checking out these projects:
I’ve said it before, but now I’ll put it in writing: Migos are in the top 10 most influential artists ever in the history of hip-hop. Before you overreact, think about it: They essentially created a style of their own, which was then jacked by almost any rapper you can think of.
One of the biggest complaints about today’s hip-hop is the lack of originality or creativity. It’s often stated that all hip-hop artists sound the same. However, there are plenty of artists who are extremely creative, unique and consistent who go unnoticed or get overlooked.
Pretty much everyone agrees that 2016 was a terrible year in general, but in a year with a lot of downs, we had some amazing music to carry us through those tough 365 days. There were dozens of perfect albums that came out last year, but here are my personal top 10 releases of 2016.
The Weeknd has become one of the biggest artists over the past several years. Since making his debut in 2011, Abel Tesfaye has transcended into a hit-making superstar.
D.R.A.M. - “Big Baby D.R.A.M.” - Oct. 21
Danny Brown - “Atrocity Exhibition” - Sept. 27
The past few weeks didn’t give us any releases from “A-list” rappers, but that doesn’t mean that there wasn’t any quality music released. Check out these latest releases in music:
When it comes to hip-hop and its evolution, Soulja Boy is arguably one of the most influential artists of all time; he was one of the first artists to succeed in the internet age. Using MySpace during its prime, Soulja Boy showed how it’s possible to use social media to get your music heard.
There have been some incredible releases so far in 2016 and over the past few weeks, several established artists released projects that are definitely worth checking out. Here are some of the best:
Where is Frank Ocean? That’s the question we’ve been asking ourselves for the past three years. Frank released his mixtape “Nostalgia, Ultra” in 2011 and his album “Channel Orange” in 2012. He made few appearances and features over the next few years, turning his back to the music world and the public eye. After teasing his album, called “Boys Don’t Cry,” in July 2015, he seemed to have vanished, leaving us in constant speculation on his whereabouts and the status of his album. Finally, after four long years, vague hints, a strange live broadcast on his website and countless memes, Frank Ocean is back. “Blonde” was released Saturday, and after having it on repeat over the past five days, I’m ready to review it.
It’s been a little over a month since my last hip-hop roundup, so there’s some catching up to do. With albums from Schoolboy Q, Gucci Mane, Lil Uzi Vert and others, the last month has given us some quality music that continues to prove 2016 has been one of the best years ever for hip-hop. Catch up with these latest releases:
This is part two of a two-part interview with Logic. To read part one, check out last week’s Avenue.
Logic is currently on The Endless Summer Tour with G-Eazy, Yo Gotti and YG. At their show in Tampa this past Sunday, I, along with my good friend David Spreen, were able to sit down with Logic on his tour bus and talk about his latest project “Bobby Tarantino,” tour life, new music, traveling and more. Check out the highlights from my interview with Logic.
Roy Wood$ is a 20-year-old rapper from Brampton, Ontario, currently signed to Drake’s October’s Very Own Sound record label. He first gained a lot of attention when he and Drake debuted their song “Drama” in July 2015, and last Friday, nearly a year later, Wood$ finally released his debut album, “Waking at Dawn.” It’s already one of my favorite albums to come out in this stacked year for hip-hop and R&B, and I’m going to break down the ten-song album.
DJ Esco – “Project E.T.” – June 24
Drake – “4 PM in Calabasas” & “One Dance Remix ft. Justin Bieber”
We’re almost halfway through 2016, and this year has already been a better year for music than the last. Some of today’s biggest artists, including Kanye West, Beyonce and Drake, have released albums this year, but some of the best projects released have been from artists with less star power. It’s time to catch you up on some of the latest and hottest releases.
When Drake released “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late” in February 2015, it felt like something was missing. To me, it sounded like Drake wasn’t trying at times, and the project really did feel like more of a mixtape than an album-quality project. To be clear, I still think that “IYRTITL” was very good; after all, Drake is one of the few artists that can’t miss. The scary part is, while “IYRTITL” was good, we all knew Drake could do better.
