The curse of living in ‘interesting times’

There’s an old quote — attributed to Chinese philosophers for some reason, even though the exact origins are dubious — that wishes to the listener, “May you live in interesting times.” This wish is called the “Chinese curse.” Now, at first that might seem a little odd. Don’t we want to live in interesting times? But it doesn’t take much reflection to get what the quote actually implies.

UF is one of the nation’s top research universities

Today, I’m in Boston with UF alumni celebrating the induction of five UF faculty members as fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The AAAS is the world’s largest general scientific society, and this week’s meeting has 10,000 attendees. UF now has 51 AAAS fellows, an indicator of our excellence in science and engineering.
