SEEK, an environmental conference for Florida high school students, was held in Gainesville June 28 to July 1 . SEEK stands for Save the Earth’s Environment through Knowledge, and the program aims to expose high school students to careers within environmental science.
Made-up Gossip, a new Gainesville-based personal care brand, launched its first line of hand soaps designed to eliminate single-use plastics. By incorporating humor and style into its brand, Made-up Gossip uses its personalized platform to educate customers on the repercussions of using plastic.
The Gainesville City Commission decided to remove the Pay-As-You-Throw program, which was created as an incentive for residents to produce less waste by making it more expensive to own a larger trash bin.

Even men have taken an interest in keeping up their appearances with beauty products, according to CNN. While I enjoy dismantling toxic masculinity and being able to express myself creatively, I can’t help but become frustrated with the amount of waste we’re producing that is harming our environment.

Plastic is bad for the environment. This has been common knowledge for years. What is controversial, however, is demanding that everyone turn vegan and ditch single-use plastic. People fail to recognize that most of the earth’s pollution stems from major corporations rather than individuals. Also, expecting everyone to stop using straws fails to acknowledge the unintended consequences, which could be catastrophic for certain groups. Certainly, if you’re able to, do what you can to help the environment. Ditch the straws or get reusable ones, ask for paper bags the next time you go grocery shopping and reduce the amount of meat you consume, but don’t expect everyone to do the same. We first must hold corporations accountable for their actions, which affect the environment differently.
