Volleyball returns home after losing first match of the season

Despite losing its first match of the season to No. 21 Colorado State Saturday, the No. 8 UF volleyball team is staying positive. The Gators are back in Gainesville after a road trip the ended with mixed results. After beating Colorado in Boulder 3-1 (25-22, 25-20, 22-25, 25-18), UF fell to CSU 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 25-14)

Barr deserves attention

My compliments to Neal Conner, chairman of the Libertarian Party of Alachua County, for his opinion piece entitled "Libertarian Party Stands for Change" on Friday. What a breath of fresh air in this otherwise discouraging election between two candidates who are very close on issues. I can't tolerate another minute of more of the same. Barr is coming to Gainesville soon, and I want to hear what he has to say before I throw away my vote one more time.

Caramelized onions are one of my favorite side notes that can easily, and with a low-caloric punch, jazz up many dishes be they tacos, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs or a sandwich. Now, before you go trekking off to candy lands and your metaphorical boots get gummed up with pralines and crème brulees, let us better introduce ourselves to the notably uncandy-like subject. Caramelized onions are onions that have been sliced thin and cooked on low to medium heat, often in a bit of fat, until they become golden brown in color, meltingly tender, and both sweet and savory in flavor. They can be delicious eaten straight out of the pan, but their awesomeness lies in their adaptability that shines when they are paired with other dishes.

GOP represents middle class

Andrew Coffey asserts that the Republican Party doesn't represent middle-class voters. Does he think Democrats do? Or is he just too politically biased to see reality? Liberals paint the Republican Party as out-of-touch because they know Democrats will lose on the issues. The price of energy is a huge drain on the economy. It is the Republicans, not the Democrats, who want to take actions to immediately reduce the price of energy. Americans want jobs. The Republicans understand small businesses create jobs and support policies that give incentive for creating growth. It is the Democrats who vilify businesses, tax them until it is unprofitable to operate in the U.S. and then complain when they leave.
