Local music scene provides excuse to get out of the dorm

A blustery force of innate headwinds faces every incoming freshman at UF, and that's before you count the crappy weather. For starters, there's the budget deficit strangling the liberal arts program (hope you're good at engineering!) and, for those who get hosed by the lottery system, the impossibility of scoring football tickets without selling a kidney. These challenges may seem daunting but manageable with determination and a spare organ.

As you study, eat and exercise in campus buildings this fall, take a minute to consider the people whose names mark their entrances. Many of the men and women who have campus buildings named for them played a vital role in making UF the university it is today.

Campus groups activate inner–activist

Oh, to be young again, when I thought homework was for pansies, a fake ID was golden, withdrawing from a class would never come back to haunt me and hangovers only lasted an hour, if at all. Just as I did, all you incoming freshmen will have ample opportunities to make mistakes (and hopefully learn from them). And as someone who has been at UF for six years, at the very least I can pass on a little wisdom to all you whippersnappers to help you get the most out of your undergraduate experience.

California Boy Lemmens preps for Hurricane

Team goofball and media favorite Duke Lemmens spoke today and he joked he was going to prep for Hurricane Fay by getting an umbrella as his protection. The Cali native hasn't ever been through a hurricane and has only dealt with earthquakes and fires.

There's a lot of advice I could give you about the next four years of your life. There's a ton of stuff I could tell you that you should or shouldn't do and a mass of truisms I could throw at you about how important education is or whatever. I'm sure you've heard it all before.
