A UF animal science class will hold its third annual cattle-roping competition, dubbed "Ropin' in the Swamp," on Saturday.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at UF's Horse Teaching Unit's livestock pavilion.

Although registration for the cattle-roping competition is closed, admission is free.

This year, students in UF's horse enterprise management class, the group sponsoring the event, have added family activities, including an Easter egg hunt and a barbecue lunch.

Lori Warren, an assistant professor who teaches the class, said 36 people would participate in the cattle-roping competition, many of them professionals.

They will work in teams to chase after a steer and rope it as quickly as possible on horseback.

The prize, nearly $7,000, came from entry fees and donations from about 50 Florida businesses, Warren said.

Other private parties contributed merchandise to the award pot, including a pair of tickets to fall's Homecoming football game.
