Gators football player Carlos Dunlap arrested for DUI

Gators football star Carlos Dunlap was arrested for DUI after Gainesville police observed his car stopped at a green light early this morning.

This is the first offense for the star defensive end.

At about 3:25 a.m., Officer Robert Rogers was sent to 200 SW 34th St. after a reckless vehicle was reported, said GPD spokesman Keith Kameg.

Upon arrival, Rogers saw a 2000 red Chrysler stopped at a green light at the intersection of Southwest 34th Street and Southwest 2nd Avenue. Rogers approached the vehicle after watching it remain immobile through several light cycles, Kameg said.

The driver, later identified as Dunlap, appeared to be asleep, Kameg said.

Rogers noticed a crack in the window of the car and began shouting at Dunlap to wake up. He would appear to rouse, then quickly nod back off, he said.

Rogers was able to reach in to put the car in park and turn off the engine, he said.

Rogers then managed to wake Dunlap enough to coax him out of the car, although he remained groggy and had difficulty speaking and listening to directions, he said.

Dunlap smelled of alcohol, his eyes were bloodshot and watery and he had a hard time keeping his balance as he submitted to field sobriety tests, Kameg said.

After performing poorly on the tests, Dunlap refused a Breathalyzer and was arrested for one count of DUI and admitted to the Alachua County Jail.
