After ticket prices for Lil Wayne’s upcoming show at UF’s O’Connell Center were released Tuesday, Melanie Tercilla wasn’t sure if she wanted to go.
The O’Connell Center announced prices for the on April 4 show on the event’s Facebook page, which has more than 2,000 people listed as interested and more than 1,000 going.
Tickets for UF students are $31, $42 and $63, depending on the level of the arena. General public tickets are $42, $62 and $73.
Tercilla wasn’t sure if the price was worth it. And she wasn’t alone, as scores of other users commented about their hesitance to spend so much for a show.
“I don’t think I want to spend like $70 to get a good view of Lil Wayne at the Stephen O’Connell Center, per se,” Tercilla said. “I think I’d rather just see him sometime else.”
Renee Musson, the associate director of the O’Connell Center, wrote in an email that Lil Wayne is being paid $125,000 to perform, with funding coming from ticket sales.
Student Government Productions will give a $10 ticket discount to the first 2,500 UF students to purchase tickets, Musson said. According to Ticketmaster’s website, presale tickets will be available Thursday at noon and all tickets will be available Friday.
“These ticket prices are below quite a few of the artists that have performed here before including the 2007 performance by Lil Wayne where the ticket prices were $101, $56, $36,” she said.
Lil Wayne performed at the O’Connell Center in 2007 with rapper Fabolous, according to Alligator archives.
Tercilla, a 20-year-old UF English junior, learned about Lil Wayne’s upcoming show while at the Big Sean and Lil Yachty concert sponsored by SGP.
She immediately wanted to go to see the artist she has listened to since middle school, but now she’s unsure if she’s willing to spend the money.
“I thought they were over-priced, not for the artist but for the venue,” she said.
Alex Ruiz, a 20-year-old UF sociology junior, said he still plans to attend the event despite thinking tickets are slightly more expensive than other on-campus concerts.
Ruiz plans to pay for floor seats for the concert, but he’ll do whatever it takes to get in the door.
“I know it’ll be a great time,” Ruiz said.
