A UF Health Shands Hospital nurse sexually battered a patient earlier this year, University Police said.

During the incident, which occurred sometime between January and March in the Shands Cancer Center’s south tower, Paul Brophy, a 30-year-old nurse in the hospital’s emergency department, stood next to the male patient as he lay on a gurney with an IV in his arm, according to the report.

Brophy then pressed his groin area into the man’s outstretched hand, according to the report.

The man was eventually moved into a private room, according to the report. Brophy entered the man’s room, lowered the man’s pants and placed his mouth on the man’s penis, attempting to perform oral sex for about 10 seconds.

Brophy then stood up, and the man saw that Brophy’s penis was fully exposed, according to the report. The victim did not consent to sexual actions.

Police arrested Brophy on charges of indecent exposure, simple battery and sexual battery, according to the report.

Authorities took him to the Alachua County Jail, where he remains as of press time in lieu of a $550,000 bond.

The hospital fired Brophy upon learning of his arrest, wrote Rossana Passaniti, the UF Health media relations coordinator, in an email.

“We take allegations of sexual assault seriously,” she said. “We are actively cooperating with the University Police Department in this investigation.”
