A Florida National Guard soldier died Tuesday in Gainesville after he lost control of his Hummer and crashed on Highway 301 in Bradford County.

The incident happened at about 11:30 a.m., when Arandall Ladarrion Shears, 20, of West Point, Ga., was driving in the left lane on Highway 301, north of Lawtey.

Shears lost control of his vehicle, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report. The Hummer veered into a grass median and flipped over, throwing Shears from the truck. He was not wearing a seatbelt.

Drivers near the accident stopped and gave Shears CPR before Bradford County Sheriff’s Office, Camp Blanding Joint Training Center and Florida Highway Patrol officials arrived at the scene.

National Guard spokesman Sgt. Thomas E. Kielbasa said an ambulance drove Shears to a hospital in Starke, where a helicopter flew him to Shands at UF for treatment.

Shears died from his injuries.
