An accident involving a car and scooter near Southwest Second Avenue and Southwest 26th Street left a UF student in serious condition Monday afternoon.

Ashley Ann Groves, a 19-year-old sophomore, was in critical condition after her scooter struck a gray Acura TL, said Gainesville Police Department Lt. Will Halvosa.

Halvosa said Ennovy K. Lomba, a UF telecommunication senior, was making a left turn when Groves struck the left side of the car.

Halvosa said when Groves struck the car, she flew into the air and may have ended up beneath a 2000 white Toyota 4Runner. Groves was taken to Shands at UF.

James Modica, a UF law student, said he was in the 4Runner, following the Acura.

He said Groves went under his SUV, but he hit the brakes as soon as he realized what was going on.

Halvosa said Monday afternoon that no charges had been filed.

Portions of Southwest Second Street were closed Monday afternoon.

When Groves was taken to Shands, she was initially listed as being in critical condition, but a nursing supervisor said she was listed as being in serious condition Monday evening, which is not as life-threatening.
