Deputies arrest woman for huffing in Kmart bathroom

A Gainesville woman was arrested Wednesday afternoon after a Kmart manager caught her sniffing aerosol in a store bathroom.

Alachua County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Linda Thompson Roberts, 43, of 9624 SW First Place, on inhaling/ingesting harmful chemicals and possession of harmful chemicals charges, according to an ASO arrest report.

At about 6 p.m. Wednesday, Norma Q. Shayhorn, the store manager, heard Roberts spraying an aerosol can inside a bathroom at the Kmart store, located on the 900 block of Northwest 76th Blvd.

When Shayhorn walked into the bathroom, she found Roberts passed out on the floor. Deputies later arrived to the scene to speak with Roberts after she woke up.

During an interview with deputies, Roberts wore dark sunglasses, swayed back and forth, and slurred her words as she spoke, according to the report.

After her arrest, Roberts told deputies she’d been “huffing” for a couple of weeks to deal with back pain, according to the report.

Deputies later booked Roberts at the Alachua County Jail, where she remained Thursday night with a $30,000 bond.
