People are seen eating at Boca Fiesta on Wednesday night.

The Backyard at Boca Fiesta and Palomino is hosting a film race where contestants are required to create a one- to five-minute film good enough to impress judges and audience members — all within 48 hours.

The event is free for all participants and viewers. Sign-ups for the event begin at 7 and the competition will begin 8 p.m. tonight at The Backyard at Boca Fiesta and Palomino, located at 232 SE First St.

Contestants will draw three genres out of a hat and choose which one they like best for the making of their film. Films also require a provided prop, a line of dialogue and an action contestants must perform.

James Barratt, a media and advertising coordinator for the event, said possible genres include detective noir, western, rom-com, science fiction, buddy cop, gangster movie, spoof and telenovela, along with several others.

It’s been more than a year since Stephanie Falcon, a 30-year-old film race contestant, has created her last film, and she’s expressed excitement.

“I’ll be the team leader as well as doing all the editing and directing,” Falcon said. “I will also have final say on all decisions. What can I say, I’m a bit of a control freak.”

Movies must be turned in by 8 p.m. Saturday and will be screened at 10 p.m.

Audience members can vote for their favorite entry with voting slips provided at the door.

Barratt said prize categories include best actor and actress, best picture, best effects or cinematography, best screenplay or original story, best editing, best soundtrack and best use of required element.

Prizes include a $25 gift card from Ameraucana Wood Fire pizza, two mainstage and cinema tickets from the Hippodrome State Theatre, a $50 gift card from SoMa Art Media HUB, brewery tours for up to eight winners from Swamp Head, 10 rentals from Video Rodeo, $50 in drink tokens from The Backyard at Boca Fiesta and Palomino, and a prize pack with a shirt, pint glass and growler from First Magnitude Brewing Company.

Barratt said this is the first in a series of events that will occur every two to three months.

“Keep an eye out in September for our Sweded Film Fest, a la ‘Be Kind Rewind,’” he said.
