Local residents can sign up for a plot of land to grow their own organic plants and vegetables Saturday.
The fall sign-up for UF Organic Gardens Cooperative's is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. and last until 11 a.m. According to the UF Office of Sustainability Web site, participants are expected to practice organic gardening methods.
"Gardening is great for exercise and stress relief. It's so good for mental health," said Julie Garrett, the garden's secretary.
Garrett has been renting a plot there since February where she grew over 350 tomatoes.
The gardens are located on SW 23rd Terrace a quarter-mile south of Archer Road.
The cost for renting a plot, which is 12 feet by 25 feet, is ,10 for a six-month time period with a ,5 deposit.
No background in gardening is required. It is also not a requirement for renters to be part of the UF student body or faculty.
While members can use seeds, tools and water for free, they are expected to volunteer two hours a month to help clean the common areas.
"You don't just rent a garden plot, you join a community," Garrett said.
