Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson is scheduled to stop in Gainesville on Saturday.

The former Tennessee senator will be at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium as the Gators face-off against the University of Tennessee Volunteers.

Thompson has had a long career as a lawyer, politician and actor with a regular role on NBC's television series "Law & Order" as New York City District Attorney Arthur Branch.

He announced his presidential candidacy Sept. 5. He has been traveling the country on his "Grassroots Tour," which began in Iowa and will end in his hometown of Lawrenceburg, Tenn., on Saturday night.

Thompson visited Jacksonville, Fla., and The Villages, Fla., on Thursday. He will continue his tour of South Florida today before coming through the Gainesville area Saturday.

In 2002, Thompson announced he would not seek re-election in the senate. He has since traveled the country as a speaker and served as chairman of the State Department's International Security Advisory Board.
