Glittery Greek letters and mascots waved in the air as sorority girls danced and chanted beneath them in preparation for the 2007 Sigma Phi Epsilon Surf Frenzy on Thursday night.

The showdown, held at The Venue, 233 W University Ave., was a line-dance competition featuring 16 participating sororities.

Surf Frenzy, one of UF's largest philanthropies, has been raising money for over a decade, but the 2007 event is the first year that all of the proceeds go to a single organization.

Surf Frenzy will donate an expected ,20,000 to the Florida Diabetes Camp, a nonprofit group that provides education and emotional support for children afflicted with Type 1 diabetes, according to a press release from Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity.

The funds were generated through T-shirt sales, a penny voting contest and a cover charge for admission.

Surf Frenzy director Troy Pashuck and others in Sigma Phi Epsilon have been camp counselors at the camp.

The funds will go to improving the camp experience as well as providing scholarship money for more campers to be able to attend, Pashuck said.

"The energy and atmosphere of the event is one-of-a-kind," he said. "The sororities take it very seriously, and they all put on a great performance."
