UF student dies early Friday morning in car crash

A UF student died early Friday morning in a single-vehicle car accident.

The accident occurred at about 2:30 a.m. on Southwest 13th Street near 16th Avenue, said Steve Orlando, UF's spokesman.

Orlando said Andrew A. Enriquez, a 20-year-old UF history junior, was a transfer student from SFCC and originally from Key Biscayne.

The cause of death has not yet been determined.

Enriquez's family could not be reached for comment.

At a Friday morning meeting of UF's Board of Trustees, UF President Bernie Machen said Enriquez died wearing an armband from a bar and with a forged ID.

"This is a tragic result of underage drinking in our community," Machen said during the meeting. "It's particularly sobering."

The accident happened a week after UF hosted a Community Alcohol Coalition meeting to look for ways to curb student alcohol abuse.

But Machen said Friday's accident proves there is still work to be done.

He said the accident is a reason not to back down from UF's fight against student binge drinking.
