FDLE releases investigation report of Tasering

The UF police officers who Tasered Andrew Meyer at a September speech were "well within" police guidelines, stated the summary of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's investigation of the event.

The two officers who were suspended with pay after the event, Eddie King and Nicole Lynn Mallo, are back on duty, according to a statement from UF President Bernie Machen.

Meyer, a UF telecommunication senior, was Tasered and arrested after officers said he resisted an arrest with violence and disturbed the peace at a John Kerry speech Sept. 17.

Officers used the Taser because they said it would provide minimal injury to him, it would have no lasting side effects and the officers would gain control in the least amount of time with the least amount of effort, according to the report.

The officers opted not to use OC spray, known as pepper spray, because it could have also affected other members of the audience, the report stated.

Other options would be to use hand strikes, kicks, knee strikes or batons. These methods were not used because they would have caused a greater chance of injury to Meyer, the report stated.

Charges against Meyer, a third-degree felony for resisting arrest with violence and a second-degree misdemeanor for disturbing the peace, are still pending a decision from the State Attorney's Office.
