Intern contest progresses to second task

There were squeals of joy from Team White Bengals and disappointed looks from Team Krackerjacks on Monday.

Five teams, each with four SFCC students, crowded into a conference room at Charles Perry Construction, where the first team was eliminated in an SFCC contest for internships throughout the state called The Interns.

At the elimination ceremony, Breck Weingart, president of Charles Perry Construction, announced the teams that would be moving on for three more tasks.

"This is a promotion," he said. "We're not firing anyone, we're promoting four teams."

Weingert announced Team Bombsquad, Big Red, Intellects and White Bengals would move on. Team Krackerjacks was eliminated from the competition.

The teams were each assigned a construction project from Rebuild Gainesville that took place Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., said Averial McKenzie, an SFCC student and project coordinator for The Interns.

Projects included building front porch stairs and creating a swing set, McKenzie said.

At the elimination ceremony, Alan Rezaei, co-coordinator of the project, announced the next task.

The second task focuses on journalism skills and is hosted by The Gainesville Sun. Rezaei said it is called "Reporting the News, Building a Newspaper."

The objective of the assignment is to create a one-page spread in the SFCC Saint Sentinel that focuses on the skills necessary for students entering the journalism workforce, he said.

Essence Glover, 17, a member of team White Bengals, was so happy that her team made it through that she let out a scream.
