A convenience store in southeast Gainesville was robbed earlier this week.

The robbery took place at the Kangaroo Express convenience store on Southeast Fourth Street on Monday night. The Gainesville Police Department responded to the call at 8:24 p.m., an incident report stated.

Armed with a handgun, the robber allegedly forced a cashier to open the register and then stole ,241, the report stated.

GPD spokesman Lt. Keith Kameg said the case has been turned over to detectives.

"Usually it's done by people who are either desperate or looking to pay for drugs," Kameg said.

GPD hasn't seen many convenience store robberies in the past, he said.

"Realistically, they don't have much money," Kameg said. "Good criminals know this."

He said criminals usually exhibit the same characteristics.

"They don't have a clue on how to exist in society, and this is all they know," Kameg said.

GPD spokeswoman Erica Doll said police are still looking for information to make an arrest.

If anyone has information regarding the robbery, call the GPD detective bureau at 352-334-2470.
