The UF Police Department received a report 12:15 p.m. Wednesday of two individuals openly carrying what appeared to be rifles along University Avenue, according to a UF Public Safety alert emailed to students.
UFPD is aware of the situation, said UF spokesperson Cynthia Roldán. Though alarming, Florida law does not prohibit people from openly carrying firearms in public spaces, she added, but it’s illegal to do so on campus.
A UFPD officer is following the pair, per a picture forwarded to The Alligator. A police car was stationed outside Library West, while two officers posted inside, according to a UF student.
A UF Public Safety alert emailed to students around 2 p.m. confirmed UFPD is monitoring the pair, and the two individuals walked adjacent to UF’s campus, not on it.
Students have posted about the situation on YikYak, photographing the pair on University Avenue.
