Tour will focus on solar power

Students seeking a more eco-friendly lifestyle can tour energy-efficient homes around Gainesville and learn more about environmentally sound ways of life during Gainesville's Solar Energy Tour on Sunday.

The tour, sponsored by the American Solar Energy Society at UF and SolarCity Gainesville, starts at 1 p.m. at UF's Energy Research and Education Park, 2610 SW 23rd Terrace.

The tour will open with a kickoff ceremony that features hybrid vehicles and a solar-powered tricycle, said Nate Mitten, a mechanical engineering doctoral student who is helping organize the event.

From around 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., the tour will travel around Gainesville to visit sites with eco-friendly buildings, including UF's Rinker Hall.

Tour planners hope to secure a 15-passenger van for students without transportation, Mitten said.
