UF football players speak to GPD about Sunday shooting

Gainesville Police have spoken to former and current UF football players about a shooting near campus Sunday, according to GPD officials.

Two people were shot in a white Crown Victoria near the Holiday Inn off University Avenue at 2:20 a.m.

Keith Kameg, Gainesville Police Department spokesman, said Corey Tevon Smith, 28, was shot in the head and taken to Shands at UF. The injury is life threatening, he said. Justin Glass, 19, was shot in the right arm, but the injury is not life threatening, Kameg said on Sunday.

He said the players might have had contact with the victims before the shooting.

Monday evening, Kameg said he had not received an update on either victim's condition.

Kameg said the department has spoken to three current football players and one former football player, Jacksonville Jaguars player Reggie Nelson. He said the players approached GPD to speak about the incident.

He said none of the players are suspects.

The car was traveling west on University Avenue when it stopped because of traffic, and a man approached and shot several times into the car.

Motives are unknown, and no suspects have been named, Kameg said.

Kameg said anyone with information regarding the shooting should contact Gainesville Police Detective Patty Nixon at 334-2483.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
