Plan aims to hire more qualified math, science teachers

UF and Florida State University could start preparing future science and mathematics teachers for elementary public schools in a new way.

FSU President T.K. Wetherell and UF Provost Janie Fouke will meet with Mark Rosenberg, chancellor of the State University System, this morning in Tallahassee to discuss ways to end Florida's shortage of qualified math and science teachers.

An initiative to more effectively recruit and train prospective math and science elementary school teachers would be funded by grants from nonprofit organizations, a UF news release stated.

Steve Orlando, UF spokesman, said the amount of the grants was a "big secret," but all the details will be released after the Tallahassee conference, which is at 11 a.m.

"It's hard to recruit people to be teachers," Orlando said. "You know, it's not a glamorous job."
