Dripping blood and moaning for brains, nine zombies lurched through campus Wednesday night.

Of course, the blood was made of corn syrup, and the undead were UF students on a Halloween zombie walk.

UF junior Chris Cano, who passed out 100 fliers for the event, got the idea from friend Alex Coward, who hosted a zombie walk in Savannah, Ga.

"I shouldn't really be talking to you because zombies don't really talk," he said.

The zombies started to gather on the Plaza of the Americas at 7:30 p.m., wearing ripped clothing and slathering on blood from a corn syrup bottle.

"I don't want to get dirty in blood. Why can't I be a clean zombie?" asked sophomore Samantha Acosta, who finally accepted some corn syrup on her face and arm.

While they waited, early arrivals started to stagger after passers-by, who easily outran them without looking up from their cell phones.

Graduate students Jason Perlewitz and Quang Vo were chased from the sidewalk and across the grass.

"I've never had a group of zombies attack me before," said Vo, who said his first instinct was to hit them in the head.

The walk was intended to go down University Avenue, but the zombies decided instead to attack Library West and the Marston Science Library.

"Remember, in the library you have to whisper your moans," said UF student Robert Garcia.
