UF's Greek Judicial Board recommended that Alpha Tau Omega be placed on conduct probation for the spring semester following hazing accusations.

At a hearing Friday afternoon, the board decided that the fraternity's cooperation with the spring sanctions would determine its fate for fall.

Alpha Tau Omega, known as ATO, was also suspended from social and recruitment privileges during fall. Members are allowed to hold two social events in the spring, but the events must be dry.

ATO must also participate in five philanthropies and a seven-week new member education program. New members are not allowed at the fraternity house, 207 S.W. 13th St., after 10 p.m.

In November, ATO was accused of depriving its new members of sleep and forcing them to be designated drivers for older members at any hour of the day or night.

Fletcher Rush, ATO president, said ATO would accept the sanctions.

UF's Student Conduct Code states that hazing includes any attempts to cause physical injury, emotional stress, humiliation or academic interference to a student to gain affiliation with a student group.

During the hearing, Rush said he was not present during any of the alleged hazing, and he did not directly know of them.

"There's always a gray area as to what goes on," Rush said.
