Sen. Jeremy Ring's proposal for the modification of Bright Futures falls far short of anything bright. A student majoring in biology with an SAT score barely above the national average and a mediocre GPA would be awarded more money than a philosophy major who scored a 1500 on the SATs and had straight A's. Not only is that absurd, but just imagine the implications of that sort of scholarship.
A student would have to decide on a major well before enrolling in his or her first college course. Otherwise, students would run the risk of losing their scholarship should they change majors. College is supposed to be a time of growing and exploring new ideas.
Further, liberal arts and sciences contribute just as much to society as more specialized fields. To suggest anything otherwise is to close one's eyes to history. There may be problems with Bright Futures, but the problem is certainly not that the scholarship allows students to pursue their own academic interests.
