Health-care professionals from around the nation will gather at UF today for a nursing leadership conference about the future of patient care and health-professional education.

The theme for this year's two-day Dorothy M. Smith Nursing Leadership Conference, named after the founding dean of the College of Nursing, is "2020 Vision for the Future of Health Care."

Nationally known speakers will discuss possible improvements in patient safety and health education, said Tracy Wright, UF College of Nursing spokeswoman.

"Our ultimate goal is better patient care," Wright said. This is the third nursing leadership conference UF has hosted, Wright said.

"After all, at one point one day we're all going to be patients or know someone who will be a patient, so it affects everyone."

The college expects 500 people to attend, and UF nursing students are encouraged to participate, she said.

"You're able to see what you're learning and how you can someday influence health care," she said.
