Another candidate has dropped out of the search for a UF College of Liberal Arts and Sciences dean.

The 10 search committee members held 15 hours of interviews Friday, Saturday and Sunday with the 10 remaining semifinalists.

Originally, the committee chose 12 candidates, but one candidate dropped out earlier in the process and another withdrew this weekend, said Pramod Khargonekar, committee chairman and College of Engineering dean. Khargonekar said he expects the rest of the process to go smoothly, and the position should be filled by mid- to late-March.

The committee asked candidates about leadership skills, experience recruiting faculty and ideas for fundraising.

The candidates were also asked about their ability to manage a large budget, he said. CLAS remains $1 million in debt after a $6 million budget deficit was discovered in 2006.

Khargonekar said the committee would select three to five finalists Wednesday.

After Wednesday's meeting, Khargonekar said he would present the finalist list to UF Provost Janie Fouke. He said UF students and faculty would have a chance to interact with the finalists during campus interviews and visits before the dean is chosen.
