The Gator Party is the first to release its platform for the Student Government spring elections scheduled for Feb. 26 and 27.

The party's platform is aimed at improving UF students' everyday lives, including graduate student life, transportation, campus safety, Department of Recreational Sports facilities and higher education through state lobbying, according to a news release from the party.

The Gator Party said it pledges to provide rentable locker space and increase banner space available to student organizations. Upgrading UF's WebMail to a more efficient system and creating a sustainability minor are also on the platform.

Kevin Reilly, the party's presidential candidate, said he wasn't worried about funding the potential new programs because "most of them don't cost money."

Reilly said he expects to complete all the initiatives, and he would begin working toward them as soon as he's elected.

The platform also focuses on graduate students, aiming to use unbiased mediators to resolve any conflict at UF and to deduct university fees from graduate student employee paychecks instead of requiring them to pay the fees all at once.

The Gator Party said it would continue current SG efforts to bring biodiesel fuel to Regional Transit System buses and to give parking-decal discounts to students who own hybrid vehicles.

To increase campus safety, the party plans to increase alternatives to drunken driving by creating a taxi hub in "popular nightlife areas" and making Later Gator routes more efficient.

Mark McShera, chairman of the opposing Orange and Blue Party, said his party would release its platform today.
