UF adds McCarney to defensive staff

UF hired former Iowa State coach Dan McCarney to join its defensive staff Friday.

McCarney, who spent 12 years at Iowa State, was hired away from South Florida, where he worked last season as a defensive line coach.

He could end up replacing co-defensive coordinator Greg Mattison, who is weighing an offer to join the Baltimore Ravens as an assistant.

McCarney and Mattison did not return phone calls for comment.

UF coach Urban Meyer plans to wait until his staff is finalized before announcing what position McCarney will coach.

But McCarney's spot seems obvious.

Half of his 30 years of experience have been spent coaching defensive lines.

"I'm thrilled about joining The Gator Nation," McCarney said in a press release. "I have the utmost respect for Coach Meyer and the UF football program. It is a dream come true for me and my wife, and we are looking forward to the opportunity."
