Former Shands nurse found guilty of killing woman

A former Shands at UF nurse accused of killing a 24-year-old UF student was found guilty Friday and sentenced to life in prison without parole, according to reports from The Gainesville Sun.

A jury found Oliver Travis O'Quinn guilty of the 2005 killing of Michelle Ann Herndon.

Herndon had been found dead in her apartment with a needle-puncture mark on her left arm, according to a Gainesville Police Department report.

The medical examiner said a high level of propofol, an anesthetic, had rendered Herndon unconscious. A bottle of propofol, in addition to two other bottles of different drugs, were found in Herndon's apartment and traced back to Shands at UF.

After Herndon's death, O'Quinn left the U.S. and had to be extradited back to the country. O'Quinn and Herndon were acquaintances, and a mutual friend said O'Quinn had been infatuated with Herndon, according to the police report.
