Former UF Provost Janie Fouke was passed over for the presidency of the University of South Carolina in favor of an in-house contender.

USC's Board of Trustees unanimously approved Dr. Harris Pastides, the university's vice president for research and health sciences since 2003, to become the university's 28th president Friday, according to a USC news release.

Pastides, 54, will assume the job Aug. 1 after USC's president, Andrew Sorenson, retires.

Fouke has served as senior adviser to the president at UF since resigning from her provost position July 1. Her resignation was announced by President Bernie Machen at a UF Board of Trustees meeting following a major financial restructuring of the administration that took effect July 1.

Fouke was also selected as one of six candidates for the chancellor position at Louisiana State University in April but was not chosen.
