Locals to run for watermelon prizes in annual race

For some early risers, the Fourth of July will begin with a running start.

The 30th Annual Melon Run/Walk will be held Friday at 8 a.m. in Westside Park.

At the end of the 3-mile race, all participants will be treated to free watermelons.

Over 110 watermelons are used for the race, said Jeff Plasschaert, director of the melon run.

The early registration fee is $17 or $20 on the day of the race and includes a T-shirt.

Registration and the proceeding awards ceremony will be held in front of the municipal pool in Westside Park.

Plasschaert expects between 200 and 300 participants, which is less than last year's number because it will take place on a weekday.
