Paul Drayton will still have an office to return to when his internship in New York City ends this summer.

In a Monday night impeachment meeting, student senators decided Drayton, Student Body treasurer and a Gator Party member, has fulfilled his duties to the Student Body and voted not to impeach him.

It was the first meeting of its kind in Student Government's history.

Drayton accepted an internship in New York City with JPMorgan Chase, where he has worked since the end of May.

Five senators from the Orange and Blue Party filed a resolution Wednesday calling for Drayton's impeachment.

The resolution included 18 clauses that claimed, among other charges, that Drayton has not tried to access his official SG e-mail address and has not kept office hours.

During the impeachment proceedings, the impeachment body, meaning senators elected in spring or summer replacement senators filling spring seats, voted on each clause to determine if it was factual. If so, a second vote was taken to determine if it constituted an impeachable offense.

Both votes would have had to pass by a two-thirds majority to be heard by a trial body, which would have determined Drayton's fate as treasurer. Six of the clauses were deemed factual, including the clause that stated the treasurer must spend a monthly average of 10 hours per week in his office, but none of the clauses were deemed impeachable offenses.

Most of the votes were made along party lines, leaving the Orange and Blue Party mostly in the minority.

Orange and Blue Party Sen. Cain Norris pointed out repeatedly that the issue was not whether Drayton was guilty but whether there was any evidence to support the clauses.

Drayton was not present at the meeting to defend himself, but Student Body President Kevin Reilly took the podium to read a letter from Drayton.

"The charges brought against me are for the most part infactual. Those which hold some truth are not the basis for impeachment," Reilly read for Drayton.

Though Student Senate President Kellie Dale said she had to remain neutral about the outcome as the meeting's chairwoman, she was happy for the future state of Drayton's office.

"I am pleased that SG finances will continue to operate smoothly and effectively," Dale said.

Sen. Sam Miorelli, who authored the resolution, said after the meeting there is nothing else to be done to impeach Drayton.

Miorelli said it was particularly egregious that the Senate voted word-for-word statutes defining the treasurer's position from the constitution as infactual.

"This is typical of the Gator Party to choose cronyism and absenteeism," he said.
