A railroad crew discovered two homemade pipe bombs while working on a train track in Newberry on Thursday morning.
"They weren't big enough that they would disrupt a train, but they were big enough they could have injured or killed one of the workers," said Art Forgey, a spokesman for the Alachua County Sheriff's Office.
A crew from Pinsly Railroad Company found the bombs around 9:30 a.m. while working on a track near the intersection of Northwest 78th Street and State Road 45, Forgey said.
After deputies confirmed that they were a threat, a bomb team was sent in to deactivate them, he said. The sheriff's office does not often deal with bombs, Forgey said.
The bombs, which were made of galvanized pipe, appeared to be homemade, Forgey said.
Deputies have no leads on who may have left the bombs or why, partially because the track is in a rural area, he said.
"There's not a lot of people who could have seen who left them," he said.
