Burleigh leaves rivalry talk to upperclassmen

As the Gators head into the start of conference play this weekend, coach Becky Burleigh says she's not going to tell her young team anything.

It's all up to the upperclassmen to let the younger players know what it means to play in the Southeastern Conference.

The Gators start off SEC play with two of UF's biggest foes: Georgia and Tennessee.

While both teams head into this weekend with losing records, Burleigh still expects tough matches from both opponents - Georgia was ranked No. 18 preseason and until the most recent count drew at least one vote in the polls.

"Both of those teams have been playing a really good schedule in the pre-conference schedule," she said.

The Volunteers have played four top-25 teams to start the season while the Bulldogs opened with five, including four in the top 10.

The Gators have challenged themselves too, facing four ranked opponents in non-conference play. The tough schedule has helped the young Gators mature quickly to be prepared for the challenge of the SEC.

"Our team has shown a lot of heart this year in terms of being able to come back when they are down, being able to win games that are pretty tough, whether it's at home or on the road," Burleigh said. "But playing in the SEC adds a whole different dimension to it, and I think it will be interesting to see how our young team responds to that."

Last year's team headed to the conference schedule with plenty of experience to draw from, Burleigh says this team is still growing though.

A big part of that growth came when the Gators defeated previously ranked No. 4 Florida State 1-0 at Tallahassee.
